Improving Body Image

Take care of your body. It’s the only place that you have to live.
— Jim Rohn

I am often asked about ways to improve body image.  As a therapist that has worked specifically with eating disorders, there are a few things in particular that seem to be especially helpful in regards to this topic.  Try them out, and see if any work for you!

1. Read the Mountain Meditation.  It is about a mountain that looks different at different times of the year.  Sometimes people find it beautiful and other times, people cannot see it at all.  However, through it all, it remains the same.  In this meditation, the mountain is symbolic of one's body and self.  I find this meditation helpful, because it reminds us to stay grounded regardless of what is occurring around us.

2. Find a mantra that works for you and say it to yourself daily.  For example, saying, "I am more than my body.  I am kind, a hard worker, and dedicated friend" can be helpful when starting the day.  Our brain takes in and internalizes what it is told.  Thus, the more we say these powerful mantras to ourselves, the easier it will be for our brain to accept and believe them.

3. Write down the things that you are thankful your body does for you.  For example, I am thankful that my arms allow me to hug my friend.  When we start to appreciate our body for what it can do rather than how it looks, we start to develop a very different relationship with it.
